The PAF and the Americans certainly tried to create the perfect photo op with the US Viceregal ambassador Ms Patterson and the Air Chief Rao Qamar smiling for the cameras at Jacobabad air base – once Pakistan’s sove-reign territory but now controlled effectively by the US military. All this apparent bonhomie was the delivery of the first three F-16s to the buyer – the Pakistan Air Force from the US manufacturers. The official press release was almost nauseating in the expression of goodwill towards the Americans and the joy the PAF felt at getting these planes. But behind this entire facade, many things are amiss and all concerned Pakistanis should seriously be worried.

To begin with, let us remember that we have paid a hefty price for these planes – $1.4 billion along with another $1.3 billion for the upgrade of our existing fleet of F-16s – the few we did manage to get delivery of and for which we have had to scour the globe for spares since the US refused. Luckily we still have a few gutsy and committed allies! So far only three planes in the new order have been delivered though the official spin is four! Let us hope we get all 18 but the past record is certainly dismal. After all, not only did the US keep our money and refused to give us the planes, the manufacturer had the audacity to charge us parking fees and then all we landed up with was wheat and soya beans – not much to bolster our defences on, but certainly a healthy contribution to the US farmers’ pockets! Why should it be any different this time? So far the US track record has not shown a change for the better – given how they are still holding up our dues in connection with the Coalition Support Fund. That too is not aid but payment for services rendered unquestioningly to US goals by the Pakistani state – and at great cost to the Pakistani nation. So let us hope the Pakistan Air Force has learnt some lessons from the past and built in some cast-iron guarantees but it would be worthwhile for our parliamentarians to demand access to the new F-16 purchase agreement. If there are no firm guarantees of supply, we may be seeing a repeat of our past F-16 history all over again. After all, the deal at the time was also made when we were the frontline state for the US in another war in Afghanistan! continue

China signed a deal with Pakistan for building two new nuclear reactors just four days after India and the US formally inked an agreement for implementing their 123 agreement, a pointer to the larger geopolitics behind the deal that has created anxieties in New Delhi  and Washington and a fresh dilemma for the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).

The timing of the deal reveals a larger strategic design on the part of China to use its all-weather ally Pakistan to contain the rise of India, and turns the spotlight firmly on Beijing's determination to defy global rules, if necessary, to create a counter-balance to New Delhi in South Asia.

According to sources in the know, an agreement for the Chashma-3 & Chashma-4 twin projects was signed on Oct 15, 2008, four days after India and the US formally inked their pact in Washington.

China and Pakistan signed a contract for the project on Nov 20, 2008. Another fuel supply guarantee agreement was signed Sep 30, 2009. After firming up various facets of the deal over two years in secrecy without informing the NSG, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), China Zhongyuan Engineering Corporation (ZEC) and China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) signed an agreement on March 31, 2010,   for the validation of contract for the 340 MW Chashma Nuclear Power Plant's twin units C-3 & C-4. The deal was made public by Beijing soon after.

China is trying to justify the deal on grounds that these two additional reactors were "grandfathered" under an earlier deal that predates its entry into the NSG in 2004 and has cited Islamabad's dire energy situation as a pretext for entering into this arrangement. continue

The US has raised objections to the agreement under which China will supply two nuclear reactors to Pakistan. These objections are likely to be eared during the next meeting of Nuclear Supply Group (NSG) scheduled to be held in New Zealand in near future.

US State Department spokesman Gordon DuGuid has already commented: "The US expects Beijing to cooperate with Pakistan in ways consistent with Chinese non-proliferation obligations." The news leak and remarks by the State Department spokesman seems to be a deliberate attempt to assess reactions of the Chinese and Pakistani authorities. The Chinese stance is quite clear, that the proposed installation of nuclear reactors is part of the agreement that was concluded before 2004 – the year China joined NSG. So the objections likely to be raised by the US do not apply to the agreement.

Pakistan certainly is perplexed as the proposed US objections are giving out signals. On the one hand, Pakistan is a frontline state in war on terror, a non-NATO ally and engaged in a strategic dialogue with the US to smoothen out differences to build a long-term relationship; while on the other hand the US is trying to block the Pak-China nuclear deal that is critical to meet Pakistan's power needs. continue

The Israeli Air Force recently unloaded military equipment at a Saudi Arabia base, a semi-official Iranian news agency claimed Wednesday, while a large American force has massed in Azerbaijan, which is on the northwest border of Iran. Both reports follow by less than a week the Pentagon’s confirmation that an unusually large American fleet sailed through the Suez Canal Saturday. Several reports stated that an Israeli ship joined the armada.

The Pentagon played down the news, saying the American maneuvers were routine. However, a report by Iran on Wednesday that it has enriched dozens of pounds of 17 per cent enriched uranium serves as a reminder that time is running out to stop Iran from being able to produce a nuclear weapon. Iran’s Fars News Agency said the Israeli military aircraft landed 10 days ago at the Saudi base near the city of Tabuk, located in northwest Saudi Arabia, one of the closest areas in the oil kingdom to Iran.

Fars said that the Tabuk base will be the central station for an Israeli attack on Iran. It quoted an Islamic news site that a commercial airline passenger said the airport in Tabuk was closed to all other traffic during the alleged Israeli landings. The passenger said that "no reasonable explanation” was given for shutting down the airport and those passengers were compensated financially and booked in four-star hotels.

“The relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel have become the talk of the town,” the passenger added. The chief authority in Tabuk, Prince Fahd ben Sultan, was reported be coordinating the cooperation with Israel.  continue

Pakistani intelligence agencies have alleged that the Afghan intelligence agency, Al-Qaeda and the Research Analysis Wing (RAW) are working together to carry out terror attacks in the country. A report by a private television channel said that anti-state elements are planning to target important personalities and government installations as well as business installations owned by members of the Ahmedi sect.

“Terrorists have acquired a huge quantity of explosives to carry out the attacks,” The Daily Times quoted the report, as saying.

“According to Threat Alert-250, anti-state elements in Afghanistan – the Afghanistan Intelligence Agency, RAW and Al Qaeda along with the Afghan Taliban were planning various terrorist activities including the assassination of high profile officers of the armed forces,” it added.

The threat alerts have been forwarded to all concerned departments, including the Interior Ministry, the Home Secretary and the Punjab Inspector General of Police. (ANI)

Despite serious objections being raised by both the US and India over China’s offer to help Pakistan build two nuclear reactors, a couple of Chinese companies have already signed contracts with Islamabad in this regard.

The China Nuclear Industry Fifth Construction Company (CNIFCC) and the CNNC China Zhongyuan Engineering Corp, which specialise in foreign nuclear projects, have agreed to work together on the third and fourth reactors at the Chashma nuclear complex in Punjab, said a statement posted on the website of the construction company.

The deal was signed on June 8, said the website- cnfc.net.cn.Meanwhile, Beijing has reiterated that China and Pakistan were working in the spirit of equality and mutual benefit, and that both countries are committed to peaceful use of nuclear energy.“We have been cooperating in this spirit,” The Daily Times quoted the spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry Qin Gang, as saying. Both the US and India had raised concerns over China’s overtures to Pakistan, as they see a high proliferation risk in Pakistan, which has a history of providing ‘illegal’ nuclear know-how’s to countries such as Libya, Iran and North Korea. Kabul circles say the dismissal of US commander was over leaking information including NATO's connection with the executed leader of the Jundallah terrorist group, Abdolmalek Rigi.

Head of Press TV's office in Kabul, Mohammad Ruhi, says US commander General Stanley McChrystal was sacked for acknowledging NATO's connection with the executed leader of the Pakistan-based Jundallah terrorist group, Abdolmalek Rigi.

He dismissed the official reasons for the firing of McChrystal, saying his growing friendship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai and intelligence leaks may have triggered the replacement. The move caused a scandal, and a British minister was sacked. In retaliation, London is believed to have released confidential statements by McChrystal to White House officials, paving the way for the commander's removal from his post.

Ruhi says many insiders also link the decision to the escalating number of US casualties in the war-torn country since the beginning of 2010. "The general opinion is that Petraeus' reputation as the 'butcher of Iraq' is meant to intimidate militants as well as Afghans,". Furthermore, Karzai's increasingly vocal protests over the civilian death toll of US and NATO operations and McChrystal's acknowledgement of mistakes fueled tensions with the US Ambassador to Kabul, Karl Eikenberry.  continue

Despite the US voicing serious concerns over China’s offer to help Pakistan set up two nuclear reactors, Beijing is likely go ahead and finance the nuclear project. Beijing is likely to formally announce its plans to build two 650 megawatts nuclear reactors in Punjab’s Chasma region during the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) meeting in New Zealand on June 24 (Thursday) amidst heavy lobbying from India against the project.

pak china friendship China strongly defends Pakistan, likely to formally announce Pak China Nuclear Deal in NSG meet

According to Chinese experts, one of the main concerns for the international community is that Bejing, like New Delhi, has not inked the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and technically it is not restricted to transfer nuclear technology to any other country. They, however, also pointed out that it is not for the first time that China is helping Pakistan with its nuclear aspirations.

“This is not the first time China has helped Pakistan build nuclear reactors, and since it will be watched by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the deal is not going to have any problems,” The China Daily quoted Zhai Dequan, deputy secretary-general of the China Arms Control and Disarmament Association, as saying.

Zhai also highlighted that Washington would not pressurize Beijing to call-off its plans as it has struck a civil nuclear deal with New Delhi in 2008, which saw the NSG making exemptions for the deal.

“Pakistan is also fighting a war on terror for the US as well as for itself, and the country’s loss is greater than the US and the other 42 coalition nations combined. The economic aid it has received is too little compared to its loss. Pakistan has an urgent need for more civil energy and that need should be looked after,” he added.

The Sino-Pakistan nuclear deal is not likely to attract strong opposition, but NSG members still do not want to see the transaction go forward, said Mark Hibbs, nuclear policy expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Policy in Washington. Hibbs believes that the US-India deal had set a precedent. Source PKKH

Mainly there are two Economic theories in practice in the world at present, namely;

1) Capitalism

2) Socialism.

1)   In most of the countries, including nearly all Islamic states of the world, the economic system is based on capitalism. The basic principle is private ownership and is called free economy i.e. Laissez Faire. Whatever an individual earns is sole owner of it, spends or saves and the savings become capital for earning interest or profit by investing this surplus.

2)  Socialism as opposed to capitalism rests on the theory of collective effort. All earnings and incomes belong to the society, which in turns looks after the needs of the citizens. The principle is get from according to ability and give according to needs. USSR till recently, China and North Korea and some S American countries have this system of various degrees. In this system a worker has no initiative or incentive left to improve his or the society lot. He just becomes a cog in the big machine.

All the Muslim countries are confused because on one hand the narrow micro definition of Interest (Riba) tortures them religiously of taking interest (eating Haram) and on the other, lure of un-imaginable amount of interest money coming into their coffers has to be justified one way the other. Here the so called Sharia and Fiqah laws come to their rescues.

All these efforts and schemes of Islamic Banking operating in Islamic countries are in disguise to make Interest, usury a haram into halal product. In a sense these schemes try to remove the guilt of haram earning from the conscious of Muslims. I would say old wine in new bottles or papering the cracks in the wall. The other noteworthy thing is that even European countries are devising interest free investment schemes to attract billions of petro dollars into their banks. They in turn give to World Bank, IMF, Asian Development Bank who then gives to 3rd World in AID with stringent conditions. A vicious circle indeed!    There is much drumming up of Interest free banking but why there is no Islamic Insurance company. The short term or long term speculation of commodities buying and selling (hoarding to sell at exorbitant prices in time of scarcity also is haram) but all Muslims, good or bad all turn their eyes the other way.

Mudarbha –Profit sharing and Musharka – Equity sharing all fall into haram category according to Quranic ideology.

You want to start a business and I lend you £100. After a year you pay me £110 including £10 as interest. This extra £10 as interest is haram. I give you £100 as a sleeping partner. After a year of your sweated labour I share half of your profit ( profit may be 100%) without any guilt. And according to the man-made shariah it is halal. What a diabolical thing, is it not.  continue

ANP Pakistan Nawai Waqt Group says ANP Should Give Up Pro India Agenda

The Awami National Party (ANP) should give up its “pro-India” agenda and support the construction of the Kalabagh Dam in Punjab province which will solve the shortage of water and power in Pakistan, an editorial in a leading Urdu paper said Saturday.

The editorial in Nawa-i-waqt said that the “blot on the character” of ANP’s previous leaders (among them Frontier Gandhi Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan’s son Khan Abdul Wali Khan) was well known to all and there was no better time for the party to give up its “pro-India agenda” and champion Pakistan’s interests which would “pay it political dividends too”.

On the opposition in Sindh to the dam, the editorial alleged that “the enemy” (India) had distributed (Pakistani) “Rs.6 arab” (Rs.6 billion) through its spy agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) to various groups in the provinces to oppose the project. It also accused “the enemy” from blocking river waters since 1962 in an attempt to parch the lands of Pakistan.

The Kalabagh Dam, to be built on the Indus river in Mianwali district of Punjab province, has no India angle per se. However, its opponents in the other three provinces have been labeled “Indian agents” for their stand.

Referring to the slanging match between an ANP member and the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid Tariq Azeem who called for a consensus on the dam during the budget discussion in the senate Thursday, the editorial said that no politics should be played on projects of national significance.

Praising the support by members of the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) to Azeem while the ANP had been supported by the ruling Pakistan People’s Party and the Jamaat-e-Ulema-Fazlur, the editorial dismissed as a “pack of lies” the ANP’s claim that the dam will lead to submergence of Nowshera town of the Khyber-Pakhtoonwa province.

Geo's Sohail Waraich did an episode with Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan in Aik Din Geo Kay Sath. I have to acknowledge it was a sad program. The authorities did not allow the program to be recorded inside his home. As a result, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan left the house, went to Kohsar Market Islamabad and recorded the program sitting on a foothpath (yes a foothpath). Even more sad was how he expressed his feelings. He said the intention in giving Pakistan nuclear bomb was to give pakistan a deterrent so that Pakistan could better focus on strengthening its core issues of education, economy etc. He said he did this to prevent another 71 mishap with Pakistan. He said he knows the psychology of Hindus because he has lived with them and they will always try to damage and hurt Pakistan whenever they get a slightest chance, that is why he wanted to make Pakistan stronger. He also said after what has happened with him he has vowed never to give another solution for Pakistan and its problems. Regrettably, he said his biggest regret has been working for Pakistani nation. Now, perhaps, it is a moment of realization for us as a nation. Are we truly respecting and rewarding our heroes, like they expect and they deserve? I believe, this hero of Pakistan has a great grudge in his heart and he is really heart broken, undoubtedly we at individual and national level need to question ourselves. Lets raise our voice and love for him. Lets not let him die regretting working for Pakistan and Pakistani nation. Source: PKKH

Husain Haqqani Pakistan’s Ambassador to United States or normally in diplomatic, defence & domestic circles also known as U.S. ambassador to Pakistan.  In his book Pakistan: Between Mosque & Military published simultaneously in Pakistan and in USA by Vanguard Books and Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, respectively which also has Cataloguing in Publication data at the Library of Congress.

In the book‘s Chapter 3 Old & New Pakistan, page 97 he writes:

Within two days of becoming Pakistan’s President and, ostensibly, its absolute ruler, Bhutto visited the U.S. ambassador at his residence, primarily to seek U.S. economic and military assistance.  In February 1972, barely two months after Pakistan’s massive military defeat, Pakistan offered the United States naval bases along the Balochistan coast in return for rearming the Pakistani forces. The proposal was communicated not only at the diplomatic level. The foreign liaison office of ISI sought a meeting, sanctioned by superior officers, with an office in the U.S. military mission to ask whether the United States would be interested in establishing bases in Pakistan. This time Pakistan’s offer of bases showed it was willing to go farther than before.

The United States decided, at least for the time being, not to encourage Pakistan in building itself as a military equal of India with U.S. support. The offer for bases was politely declined.

He cities the above claim with three sources:

  1. ‘Conversation with Pres. Bhutto Wednesday Evening Dec 22’ telegram 891 from the U.S. embassy, Islamabad to U.S. Department of State , December 23, 1971 in R. Khan, ed, American Papers, p766
  2. ‘GOP (government of Pakistan) Soundings on US Bases, Defense Pact and Arms for Pakistan’ telegram from U.S. embassy, Islamabad to U.S. Department of State, ibid, pp 795-96
  3. ‘GOP Willingness to Grant U.S. Base Right’ telegram 505 from U.S. embassy, Islamabad to U.S. Department of State, ibid 797

Husain Haqqani who was a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment and associate professor of International Relations at Boston University and for a period of one year from 1992 to 1993 some how Pakistan’s ambassador to Sri Lanka as described by the book.

The Pandora Box of allegations he has put forward against one of Pakistan’s most popular leader Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who was President & later Prime Minister, father of Benzair Bhutto two time Prime Minister herself and father in law of current President Asif Ali Zardari is of historic propositions.  Pakistan people’s party has till date maintained the reasons behind Bhutto’s removal & later judicial assassination were his pro China, pro Nuclear & anti Army establishment stances.

Ambassador Haqqani who is also the first uncle of my dear college mate bearing the same last name as his, will have to clarify his stance on Bhutto Government’s such offerings. Let us not forget Bhutto who was also a former foreign minister is portrayed as a world renowned visionary in foreign policy but such claims made by Ambassador Haqqani have confused me atleast, were they all distortions & lies? Also to imagine United States declining an offer for bases from a government that had just lost half of its country and was the most weakest in any point of history, that also in the most Geo-Strategic location in the world is beyond any conspiracy theorists imagination.

The recent allegations by CIA, RAW and Afghanistan on ISI for its involvement in Afghanistan and supporting Taliban are based on false notions. Instead of blaming ISI, these notorious agencies should look into their own past and present. They are the main culprits who are playing havoc with the peace and stability of the world. International neutral observes should understand that ISI is highly professional and able intelligence agency. It has nothing to do with these types of malpractices. The main goal of maligning ISI and Pakistan is to exert pressure on Pakistan, and ask it to do more in War on Terror. The world community instead of blame game should support ISI, only then we can win against Extremism and Terrorism.

Introduction

Pakistan is located at a very strategic location in South Asia. Some Western analysts call it a geographical pivot of the world. Pakistan shares long borders with two hostile neighbors Afghanistan and India. Both countries along with America and Israel have always played havoc with the safety and security of Pakistan. These threats and insecurity has aroused especially after the US War on Terror. Right now Pakistan is facing growing insurgency, terrorism, suicide bombings, attacks on security forces and internal strife. All these threats are countered and eliminated by our Inter Services Intelligence (ISI); according to ex DG ISI General ® Hameed Gul and DG ISPR Maj Gen Athar Abbas, ISI is the “first line of defense of Pakistan” against any foreign aggression or threat. There are constant efforts by our enemy states to weaken ISI and for that purpose they put obscure accusations against ISI. Now coming to the point that is threats and allegations on our Intelligence Agency (ISI) for supporting and plotting operations against Afghans, Indians and Americans in Afghanistan. All these allegations are based on false fallacies. There is no credible or concrete evidence of ISI’s involvement against any country. ISI is a highly professional organization. It knows very well about its role and duties, and it is obvious that it will not indulge itself in any manner against the interests of the country. Focus of the study will be to highlight the overt and covert operations of CIA, MOSSAD and RAW around the world, and how they have affected the overall security of Pakistan.

ISI’s Origin and Role

ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) was founded by a British Army officer Major General R Cawthome in 1948. The main goal of ISI is to safeguard the country mainly from external and internal threats, counter intelligence while playing a major role in the defense of the country. ISI is one of the best organizations in the world both operationally and tactically, it has always played an important and responsible role in the world’s peace and stability. ISI’s role in Afghan Jihad against Soviets can never be ruled out. Whole world condemned the Soviets incursion into Afghanistan, it was ISI which with the support of other countries helped Afghanistan to free itself from Soviet occupation and live as a sovereign and independent state. ISI is a highly professional organization and it works under the most sophisticated and able command and control system of GHQ. Role of ISI against the war against terrorism is also appreciable; it is ISI that has captured more than 700 militants including high profile Al-Qaeda leaders. No other intelligence agency in the world has done this much effort in war against terrorism. According to Al Qaeda’s Leader Sheikh Yazid in an interview, “Pakistan has inflicted huge damage on Al Qaeda more than any other country in the world”. I think this is a clear indication that an enemy accepts the potential and operational capabilities of ISI. Now a days a propaganda by the Western Media, Americans, Afghans and Indians have taken place in which they are constantly blaming ISI for every malpractice in Afghanistan or in India. continue

China Defense Minister & Pakistan Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani China, Pakistan Pledge to Strengthen Defense Ties

Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie (R), also a state councilor, shakes hands with visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in Beijing, China, June 17, 2010. (Xinhua/Ding Lin

China and Pakistan pledged to strengthen defense ties Thursday at a meeting between Chinese Defense Minister Liang Guanglie and visiting Pakistani Chief of Army Staff Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. "Cooperation between the Chinese and Pakistani armed forces is exemplary and has been fruitful," Liang, also a state councilor, said during the meeting at the Diaoyutai Guest House Thursday morning.

Liang said the two sides should make continuous efforts to conduct their cooperation programs well. He said China would join hands with Pakistan to bring military relations to a new high. Kayani said Pakistan values its defense and security cooperation with China, noting that the two countries have cooperated fruitfully in national defense industries in recent years.

He added Pakistan would further strengthen exchange and cooperation with China. Kayani will also meet with Chinese State Councilor and Minister for Public Security Meng Jianzhu, top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo, and Vice Chairman of China's Central Military Commission Guo Boxiong later Thursday.

A music teacher masturbated and forced his female student to have sex with him. This happened inside the South Florida Hindu Temple for four years. The student is 14 now and testified in court on Tuesday. Semen splatter has been found by the police inside the Hindu temple.

When the girl's family tried to go public with this, the Indian community forced them to keep the scandal under wraps, shunning the girl and her family.  If this was a case involving a Pakistani, even if there was a hint of Pakistani involvement, like maybe the Indian music teacher traveled to Karachi en route to the Himalayas, this news would have been on CNN, Fox and BBC. But since it involves an Indian, the US media will give it a pass. This is not an issue of religion. Deviants are found in all religions. It's an issue of how the Am-Brit media selectively treats stories that impact government's foreign policy priorities.

For example, in keeping with the official Washington policy of elevating India as a future power, the Am-Brit media won't cover the story of an Australian preacher burned alive with his two young boys by an Indian religious mob. But when the professors of London School of Economics decide to become Inspector Gadgets and release a ridiculous 'I-hate-you' report against ISI and the Pakistani military, it is accorded maximum space by the Am-Brit news media because it simply suits current Am-Brit policies. continue

These are all signs that Turkey has indeed begun to wake from its centuries-long slumber. And when Turkey wakes, as Napoleon said of China, the world will shake.

The future is no longer in plastics, as the businessman in the 1967 film The Graduate insisted. Rather, the future is in China. If a multinational corporation doesn’t shoehorn China into its business plan, it courts the ridicule of its peers and the outrage of its shareholders. The language of choice for ambitious undergraduates is Mandarin. Apocalyptic futurologists are fixated on an eventual global war between China and the United States. China even occupies valuable real estate in the imaginations of our fabulists. Much of the action of Neal Stephenson’s novel The Diamond Age, for example, takes place in a future neo-Confucian China, while the crew members of the space ship on the cult TV showFirefly mix Chinese curse words into their dialogue.

Why doesn’t Turkey have a comparable grip on American visions of the future? Characters in science fiction novels don’t speak Turkish. Turkish-language programs are as scarce as hen’s teeth on college campuses. Turkey doesn’t even qualify as part of everyone’s favorite group of up-and-comers, that swinging BRIC quartet of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Turkey remains stubbornly fixed in Western culture as a backward-looking land of doner kebabs, bazaars, and guest workers.

But take population out of the equation — an admittedly big variable — and Turkey promptly becomes a likely candidate for future superpower. It possesses the 17th top economy in the world and, according to Goldman Sachs, has a good shot at breaking into the top 10 by 2050. Its economic muscle is also well defended: after decades of NATO assistance, the Turkish military is now a regional powerhouse.

Perhaps most importantly, Turkey occupies a vital crossroads between Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia. A predominantly Muslim democracy atop the ruins of Byzantium, it bridges the Islamic and Judeo-Christian traditions, even as it sits perched at the nexus of energy politics. All roads once led to Rome; today all pipelines seem to lead to Turkey. If superpower status followed the rules of real estate — location, location, location — then Turkey would already be near the top of the heap.

As a quintessential rising middle power, Turkey no longer hesitates to put itself in the middle of major controversies. In the last month alone, Turkish mediation efforts nearly heralded a breakthrough in the Iran nuclear crisis, and Ankara supported the flotilla that recently tried to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza. With these and other less high-profile interventions, Turkey has stepped out of the shadows and now threatens to settle into the prominent place on the world stage once held by its predecessor.  In the seventeenth century, the Ottoman Empire was a force to be reckoned with, spreading through the Balkans to the gates of Vienna before devolving over the next 200 years into “the sick man of Europe.”

Today, a dynamic neo-Ottoman spirit animates Turkey. Once rigidly secular, it has begun to fashion a moderate Islamic democracy. Once dominated by the military, it is in the process of containing the army within the rule of law. Once intolerant of ethnic diversity, it has begun to reexamine what it means to be Turkish. Once a sleepy economy, it is becoming a nation of Islamic Calvinists. Most critically of all, it is fashioning a new foreign policy.  Having broken with its more than half-century-long subservience to the United States, it is now carving out a geopolitical role all its own.

The rise of Turkey has by no means been smooth. Secular Turks have been uncomfortable with recent more assertive expressions of Muslim identity, particularly when backed by state power. The country’s Kurds are still second-class citizens, and although the military has lost some of its teeth, it still has a bite to go along with its bark.

Nonetheless, Turkey is remaking the politics of the Middle East and challenging Washington’s traditional notion of itself as the mediator of last resort in the region. In the twenty-first century, the Turkish model of transitioning out of authoritarian rule while focusing on economic growth and conservative social values has considerable appeal to countries in the developing world. This “Ankara consensus” could someday compete favorably with Beijing’s and Washington’s versions of political and economic development. The Turkish model has, however, also spurred right-wing charges that a new Islamic fundamentalist threat is emerging on the edges of Europe.  Neocon pundit Liz Cheney has even created a new version of George W. Bush’s “axis of evil” in which Turkey, Iran, and Syria have become the dark trinity.

These are all signs that Turkey has indeed begun to wake from its centuries-long slumber. And when Turkey wakes, as Napoleon said of China, the world will shake. by John Feffer

“As long as Muslims hate and fear one another more than they hate their conquerors, they will remain a vanquished people.”  Muslims are numerous but powerless. Divisions among Muslims, especially between Sunni and Shi’ites, have consigned the Muslim Middle East to almost a century of Western control. Muslims cannot even play together. The Islamic Solidarity Games, a regional version of the Olympics, which were to be held in April in Iran, have been cancelled, because the Iranians and the Arabs cannot agree on whether to call the body of water that separates Iran from the Arabian Peninsula the Persian Gulf or the Arabian Gulf.

Islam Muslims Muslim Disunity

Muslim disunity has made it possible for Israel to dispossess the Palestinians, for the U.S. to invade Iraq, and for the U.S. to rule much of the region through puppets. For example, in exchange for faithful service, Egypt receives $1.5 billion a year from Washington, which enables President Mubarak to buy off opposition. The opposition had rather have the money than support the Palestinians. Therefore, Egypt cooperates with Israel and the U.S. in the blockade of Gaza.  continue

Reports circulating in the Kremlin today state that Prime Minister Putin [photo top left] has ordered Russian military forces to prepare to confront American military forces in Afghanistan over what Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov warns is the “greatest threat to International peace and security”, Afghanistan’s thriving drug trade supported by the US and NATO.

Not being reported to the American people about the Afghanistan war is that it has nothing to do with their being protected from terrorists, but rather it involves the billions of dollars gained for many of the West’s top intelligence agencies (mainly the CIA) from the heroin produced in this region (90% of World’s total) that by 2001 the Taliban had virtually eliminated.

Immediately after the US invasion of Afghanistan in October, 2001, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) installed one of their main Afghan operatives, Hamid Karzai, as President, who then put into power his brother Ahmed Wali Karzai, who since then has increased heroin production to levels unseen in modern times and resulting in the deaths of tens of Viktor Ivanov, the head of Russia’s Federal Drug Control Service, Russia’s National drug enforcement agency, told parliament in May that it was reasonable to “call the flow of Afghan opiates the second edition of opium wars.” Ivanov was referring to the 19th-century war between Britain and China sparked by exports of opium from British India to China. continue

"Heard you mention of the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico this morning, and you (and most everyone else except maybe George Noory) are totally missing the boat on how big and bad of a disaster this is. First fact, the original estimate was about 5,000 gallons of oil a day spilling into the ocean. Now they're saying 200,000 gallons a day. That's over a million gallons of crude oil a week!

First, the BP platform was drilling for what they call deep oil. They go out where the ocean is about 5,000 feet deep and drill another 30,000 feet into the crust of the earth. This it right on the edge of what human technology can do. Well, this time they hit a pocket of oil at such high pressure that it burst all of their safety valves all the way up to the drilling rig and then caused the rig to explode and sink. Take a moment to grasp the import of that. The pressure behind this oil is so high that it destroyed the maximum effort of human science to contain it.

When the rig sank it flipped over and landed on top of the drill hole some 5,000 feet under the ocean. Now they've got a hole in the ocean floor, 5,000 feet down with a wrecked oil drilling rig sitting on top of is spewing 20 0,000 barrels of oil a day into the ocean. Take a moment and consider that, will you!  continue

What the United Nations independent investigator on extrajudicial killings would like is for countries that employ surprise drone attacks to first prove they have attempted to capture or incapacitate suspects. The investigator, Philip Alston, issued a 29-page report Wednesday that the New York Times termed “Highly Critical” of such attacks by  the U.S. and, says the Associated Press, “called on countries to lay out rules and safeguards for carrying out the strikes.” By going after terrorist networks, Alston warned, the U.S. example “could quickly lead to a situation in which dozens of countries carry out ‘competing drone attacks’ outside their borders against people ‘labeled as terrorists by one group or another,’” Charlie Savage reported for the Times. “I’m particularly concerned that the United States seems oblivious to this fact when it asserts an ever-expanding entitlement for itself to target individuals across the globe,” Alston is quoted as saying. “This expansive and open-ended interpretation of the right to self-defense goes a long way towards destroying the prohibition on the use of armed force contained in the U.N. Charter,” Alston pointed out.

Dawn News

ISLAMABAD: The tropical cyclone, named “Phet”, in the Arabian Sea was likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours, met office reports said.

The cyclone had moved in a northwestern direction during the past 12 hours and was now cantered at 17 degree North and 61 degree East, about 900 kilometres southwest of Karachi.

The Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre associated with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued a warning that the fishermen of Sindh and Balochistan who are in the open sea should return to the coast immediately. All fishermen were advised not to venture in the open sea till Saturday.

Initially, the storm is likely to move in a northwestern direction close to the Oman coast and then expected to re-curve in a northeastern direction toward Pakistan’s coastal areas.

The official source at the met office told APP that the waves caused as a result of the storm can be a dozen feet high in the sea.

Under the influence of this cyclone, heavy rains accompanied with dust and thunderstorms are expected in coastal areas of Sindh and Balochistan.

Sea conditions along the Sindh-Makran coast are also expected to be rough during the next 48 hours.

According to reports, around 170 boats were currently missing in the sea while fishermen and people living in coastal areas had been advised to keep alert as the storm was likely to approach the country’s coastal areas during the next 24 hours.

Yesterday, the Israeli military attacked and boarded one of the Turkish aid ships sailing to Gaza as part of a flotilla, killing 19 and injuring many more. As this occurred in international waters, it is not only an act of piracy but could also be construed as an ‘act of war'. This attack on unarmed civilian men and women illustrates the moral depths to which the Jewish state has sunk. An Al Jazeera reporter on board the vessel says the Israelis fired live bullets even after a white flag was hoisted. This atrocity and the potential fall-out should merit loud condemnation from the international community … but don't hold your breath! We have yet to witness the extent of Turkey's response.

Why are so many nations bending to Israel's will or staying silent on its crimes? What is it about this minuscule country that enables it to have so much control on decisions made by larger and more powerful nations? It refuses to abide by international laws and treaties. It illegally occupies great swathes of Palestinian land and it's imposing an illegal blockade on Gaza. Moreover, it is the only country that could get away with assassinating its enemies on foreign soil. continue
